What is a pineberry?

Pineberries or Pineberry Strawberry, is also known in Europe like Ananaserdbeere, which is the German word for Pineberry Strawberry. It looks like a strawberry, but tastes like a pineapple. Its unique appearance attracts immediate attention, white flesh with red seeds all over them.

Pineberries are the oldest variety of strawberry and they came into the market, with crossing Chilean white strawberry, Fragaria chiloensis and North American red strawberry. The product from this crossing was Fragaria ananassa– base material for many strawberry varieties. However, pineberries shouldn’t be confused with Alpine strawberries or Fragaria Vesca.

The pineberry is usually grown from March to December and because of its uniqueness it’s on the edge of extinction. During its growing season, we get little quantities of pineberries and that’s why in Japan, a single pineberry is sold for $4. Nowadays, breeders are trying to save this plant from extinction and they are doing an excellent job.

I wonder if the white strawberry plants are more expensive than ordinary strawberries as they seem to fall under the category of special and more exotic fruits. Cooking is my passion and making fruit and veggie salads is my thing! I can only imagine how pineberries and other strawberry sorts will be divine in my new salad recipes  I’ll surely try them out. Judging by the sweet and sour taste of strawberries, I believe the pine berry would go well with balsamic vinegar, figs and lettuce

Garry

I have never tried pineberries; this is actually the first time that I am coming across the information on this strawberry sort – they seem so juicy and exotic. And I had no idea they were so healthy and nutritious! I am sure I will love the pineberry taste as it is allegedly similar to pineapple which I adore! Do you think you can provide us some pine berry recipes?

Simone

My kid loves fruit and vegetable shakes, he is totally crazy about strawberry shakes; so I am considering planting strawberry plants in my terrace pots or in the garden. Could you please send me some links for instructions for strawberry plants care? Otherwise you can perhaps write an article about simple and easy balcony gardening for those of us who appreciate herbs but don’t have enough time for daily gardening.

David

It is strange to see this albino-like white strawberry sort, thanks for letting us know of the existence of pine berry fruit. Need to try it out urgently as I suffer from high blood pressure for many years. So I am happy that I came across this article and will check out my local supermarket to see if they have pineberries in offer.

Rebecca

My daughter unfortunately suffers from various allergies. I was wondering if pineberry is safe enough for people with allergies as strawberries are known to cause some allergic reactions. Her allergy tests have not shown that she has any strawberry allergies but to be totally sure, I wanted to check with you if it is ok if she eats pineberries.

Grace

A cousin of mine is a mom-to-be! I am sure she will be thrilled to read the article on pineberry fruit as it will be beneficial for her own and her baby’s health. What is more, we’ll soon go together to the city mall where I can surprise her with a bunch of tasty pineberries.
