Top 7 Money–Saving Ways To Whiten Teeth At Home

Great hair, good outfit, nice eyes are certainly the things that catch our eye when we first meet someone. But another very important thing is a beautiful, white smile. Don’t you agree?

Coffee, cigarettes, tea, red wine are just some of the reasons for our stained, yellow teeth but we know that we can’t give up on everything. Luckily, there are ways of whitening our teeth that don’t involve running to our dentist’s office or using hard chemicals on our teeth.

Try these tricks at home and brag with your smile.

Baking soda

Baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) contains chemical compound which makes it an excellent mild abrasive. It’s this abrasiveness that helps effectively remove coffee, tea or cigarette stains and help you whiten your teeth in a natural way. A simple mixture of baking soda and water or lemon can help you achieve your aim in getting whiter smile.

Mix half a teaspoon of baking soda with just few drops of either lemon or water. Stir this mixture preferably into a paste, because that way it will be easier to apply it. Brush your teeth with a soft toothbrush for no more than two minutes.

Or if there is a stain that you particularly want to remove, apply the paste and let it sit on it, but again no more than two minutes. Then spit the baking soda out and rinse your mouth with warm water or your regular mouthwash. Wash your toothbrush thoroughly as well.

Do this every other day for at least two weeks and start showing your smile to the world.

Oil pulling

Cleaning your teeth by swishing oil in your mouth for at least 20 minutes is a practice known as oil pulling. Oil pulling also known as “gundusha” and “kavala” is an ancient Ayurvedic dental technique. The practice of oil pulling can be done with sesame, olive, sunflower oil, but the best choice would be coconut oil.

If you do this swishing every day on an empty stomach despite getting the bright smile that you always wanted you’ll also improve your overall health since it has been shown that this process draws out all toxins from your body.

Coconut oil contains lauric acid which helps reduce plaque and bacteria which are the major contributors to yellow teeth. Lauric acid has anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial characteristics which remove plaque and bacteria from the teeth, leaving you with whiter teeth and fresher breath.

The procedure of oil pulling:

  • Take a teaspoon of coconut oil.
  • Swish the oil back and forth into your mouth making sure that you’ve covered every inch of it. Swish for 15-20 minutes without gargling;
  • Spit out the oil into a trash bin or any other container you’ll later throw away in the trash. Don’t spit it out in your sink because you’ll soon have to ring your plumber since the oil can clog the drains;
  • Rinse your mouth with warm salt water and brush your teeth as you normally do.

Do this process every day or every other day

Note: Coconut oil is solid and you might have to chew it for a while until it turns into liquor. Or if you are impatient you can heat it up just for a few second in the microwave.

Activated charcoal

Activated charcoal is used for many years for absorbing toxins from the body. It was created only for medical purposes.

Activated charcoal chemically attracts other substances to its surface and can absorb thousands of times its own weight.  With an enormous surface area, equivalent to a 150,000 square-foot field, charcoal can absorb a lot of toxins, atoms, and ions.

You can buy activated charcoal as capsules (clear capsules containing powdered charcoal), or as powder.

Since active charcoal is great in removing toxins from the body you can also try its use in your oral hygiene. Dip your toothbrush into the charcoal powder or put a capsule on your toothbrush (whichever you have bought works just fine). Brush your teeth for 3-5 minutes then rinse your mouth with warm water.

Not only will charcoal whiten your teeth, it will also change the pH of the mouth, leaving the mouth healthy by removing bad bacteria, preventing cavities and gingivitis.

Bentonite clay is rich in minerals like calcium, silica, magnesium, iron, sodium and potassium. Thanks to all this benefits a combination of water and clay mixed into a paste can be very helpful in the process of whitening the teeth. Brush your teeth with this paste or for more stubborn stains leave the paste on for two minutes and then rinse your mouth thoroughly with warm water.

Tip: Use bentonite clay no more than twice a week

Despite its use as a tooth paste you can also use bentonite clay as oral rinse to whiten and remineralize your teeth. Mix ¼ of water and ½ teaspoon of clay in a small jar and shake it really well. This way you get alkalizing and toxin removing mouth wash. Wash your mouth with this combination for 1-2 minutes for whiter and remineralized teeth.
