Cardiovascular health benefits
Even though traditional medicine has not yet approved turmeric as a healing supplement, there is a research on turmeric`s impact on health and its miraculous cardio-protective properties.
We will all agree that we need some physical activity in order to keep our body and mind fresh and on alert. What better way to step it up and join the gym? Well, it seems that turmeric has also done its part in the exercising area as well.
It produces some of the cardiovascular health benefits and age-associated changes in arterial health. A study published in the American Journal of Cardiology revealed that turmeric reduces the risk of heart attack by 56% and improves the vascular function as an aerobic exercise in postmenopausal women.
The study which lasted for 8 weeks examined 32 women in the postmenopausal period and divided them into 3 groups: exercise, curcumin and non-treatment control. They followed the reaction of the blood vessels (also known as the endothelium) and this endothelial function is crucial for developing atherosclerosis.
The group exposed to curcumin received 150 mg of turmeric extract and their diet of exercising habits remained unchanged during the study.
The group exposed to exercises did aerobic sessions more than 3 days a week and additional home exercises, they also cycled, walked and did a 30 to 60 minutes long sessions, increasing maximal heart rate by the end of the trial.
After the study finished, it was concluded: “The present study showed that regular ingestion of curcumin or regular aerobic exercise training significantly improved endothelial function.
The magnitude of improvement in endothelial function to the same extent, suggesting that curcumin may prevent the age-associated decline in endothelial function in postmenopausal women.”
Turmeric should never be used as a replacement for exercises. Meaning that both exercises and turmeric`s use can be beneficial for the body.
The study wasn`t conducted on a group of people who undergone both treatments and therefore it`s still unclear what will happen if we use turmeric as a supplement and exercise at the same time. We shouldn`t overlook the various health benefits of turmeric, but we also shouldn`t implement it as a substitute to exercises.
