To many of us dogs are an important member of our family. We take care of them, we bathe them, we play with them, we take them for a walk, we feed them. And we are giving our best to provide them the best food there is. That’s why we rely on many advertisements of well known companies which claim that they provide the food rich in all nutrients necessary for our dog’s health.
Unfortunately, recently we have read some disappointing news about many poisoned dogs. Many of these dogs had something in common. They were all fed food from Purina.
Lawsuit against Purina
Recently, a lawsuit has been filed against Nestle Purina Company. The lawsuit is claiming that one of the company’s most popular dog food brands contains toxins which are poisoning and even killing people’s pets.
The lawsuit was filed in California federal court by pet owner Frank Lucido. He claims that allegedly thousands of dogs which were fed Beneful dry kibble dog food, got sick or died.
Lucido and his family were owners to three dogs: an eight year old English Bulldog, an eleven year old Labrador and a four year old German Shepherd. They started feeding their dogs Beneful in late December and early January, according to the suit. During that period, because of some renovations in their house, the dogs were living in three different places. So the only thing they had in common was the food.
In the lawsuit is said that all three dogs became ill in late January, and the English Bulldog eventually died. A post –mortem examination on the dog has shown internal bleeding and liver malfunction which are “consistent with poisoning”- the suit says.
There were 3000 more complaints by pet owners who were similar to that of Lucido. Their dogs also became ill after consuming Beneful kibble style dog foods.
The Health Problems From Which The Dogs Suffered
Pet owners complained that their dogs suffered these health problems after consuming Purina Beneful products:
- kidney malfunction
- bladder stones
- internal bleeding of the stomach and other organs
- liver malfunction and failure
In some cases, pet owners said that their dogs showed some of these symptoms before they died:
- weight loss
Pet owners complained that these symptoms occurred in dogs of all ages. In some cases the dog died just a few days after it felt sick.
Which Beneful Products are Hurting the Dogs?
In the lawsuit, the plaintiff alleges that these dry ”kibble” dog foods are making dogs ill and killing them:
- Purina Beneful Healthy Smile
- Purina Beneful Original
- Purina Beneful Healthy Weight
- Purina Beneful Healthy Radiance
- Purina Beneful Healthy Fiesta
- Purina Beneful Incredibites
- Purina Beneful Playful Life
- Purina Beneful Healthy Growth for Puppies
Allegedly, these pet foods consist of substances which are toxic to animals, including:
Propylene glycol- component of antifreeze and a known animal toxin that is poisonous to cats and dogs. The lawsuit says that, the maker of Purina Beneful knew or should have known that the FDA prohibited propylene glycol from being used in dog food, but the company didn’t pay attention to this ban and continue to use it.
Mycotoxins are a group of toxins, produced by fungus that occurs in grains. In the lawsuit, the plaintiff says that high levels of mycotoxins were found in the tests conducted on Purina Beneful Original.
Homemade Dog Food
Sure, already prepared bag of food is the easier choice for us, but reading the lawsuit has certainly brought some things into perspective. Nobody wants to see their dog getting ill or find it dead just because they didn’t put a little effort in preparing homemade food for it.
First check the ingredients that your dog needs. Dogs have different nutrient requirements than humans: fat (meat or oil), calcium (dairy), high- quality protein (meat, seafood, dairy or eggs), essential fatty acids (egg yolk or oatmeal) and carbohydrates (grains or vegetables- no onions though).
Use a processor to shred whatever you have chosen to serve your dog today. The best thing about homemade dog food is that you’ll know exactly what’s in the bowl and you’ll always be sure that you are feeding your dog properly.
