Thing to ask a new dentist

If you are looking for a new dentist for your family, it can be intimidating to find a new one that will suit your family’s needs. When you meet with a potential new dentist, it’s important to ask the right questions before you decide on a new dentist Kitchener Waterloo residents.

What hours are you open?

This is very important. With jobs, school, etc.  you will want to try to find a dentist whose business hours meet your family’s scheduling needs. Ideally, look for a dentist that offers evening or weekend appointments, or any other time that best suits your particular schedule.

Do you offer emergency services?

Although dental emergencies are much rarer than other types of medical emergencies, you don’t want to get caught in a situation where you are in need of a dentist after hours and can’t find one. By choosing a family dentist that also offers emergency services, you can rest assured that should the need arise, you can be cared for without any trouble. In the case of a dental clinic with more than one dentist, you may not be seen by your own dentist but whichever dentist is on call that particular day.

Do you offer pediatric dentistry services?

Treating children in stressful situations such as going to the dentist requires a certain degree of special skills. If you have young children and the dentist you are considering hiring doesn’t have much experience in dealing with kids, it’s probably a good idea to look elsewhere.

Do you offer sedation?

If you or anyone in your family is particularly nervous about going to the dentist, or if you have extensive amounts of work to be done, you may wish to have your dental work done under sedation. Unfortunately, not every dentistry practice offers sedation, and those that do don’t all offer the same type. Ask about the types of sedation the dentist offers, including nitrous oxide, general anesthesia, etc.

Can I take a tour of the office?

Any dentist worth his salt will allow you to be shown around the office, while respecting patient privacy, of course. While you look around, take note of how clean the office is, if there are waiting room activities for the kids, if the staff seems friendly, if there seems to be a long wait time, etc. All of these things should factor into your decision to choose the dentist or not.

Finding a new dentist for your family can be stressful. You will want to ensure that the dentist is a good fit for your family’s needs, preferences, schedule, and more. The best way to do that is to interview a potential dentist to see if you are a good fit for each other.  Choose a dentist whose personality makes you feel at ease and who is willing to answer all of your questions during the interview, as this is a good indication that he will be patient with you and your family members during your appointments in the future.
