Technology has helped to transform a lot of aspects of our lives. One thing we don’t often think about, is how it’s helped contribute to much better nutrition.

Most of us are constantly looking into ways to stay healthy and thanks to technology, it’s easier than ever before to improve our nutrition. Here, we’ll look at some new and existing technologies which can improve our nutrition.

D-Tree International

Malnutrition has been a significant issue in developing countries for decades. However, improvements have started to be made thanks to technology. D-Tree International has been one of the major companies to focus on tackling the problem by utilising available technology.

The company has been collaborating with local governments, introducing systems which improve access to local medical care. Its solutions help healthcare workers to identify when patients may need more specialised nutrition care, as well as ensure they’re getting all of the care they need. (1)

Nano packaging

Although it’s yet to take off in other parts of the world, nano packaging has proved successful in the Asia Pacific food industry. The specialised packaging is designed to preserve food as well as extend its shelf life. However, it also has the potential to indicate whether there are any contaminants present. This lets customers know whether or not it’s safe to buy the food, and whether it’s been tampered with.

Nutrition apps

In developed countries, obesity has become a major issue. However, technology is helping us to make much healthier food choices, especially nutrition related apps.

These convenient applications help us to understand the nutrition content of the foods we consume. They also provide food logs, enabling us to keep an eye on what we’re eating and to ensure we don’t go over our nutritional daily intake. (2)

Agricultural Biotechnology

One of the most exciting developments in the world of nutrition tech, is agricultural biotechnology. Scientists are constantly working on ways to make the foods we consume have a higher nutritional value.

They are also creating genetically altered crops which are capable of growing in harsh temperatures. This alone can help to ensure those living in harsh environments can survive with adequate nutrition.

Refractometers

A lot of tools have been introduced onto the market which have helped with nutrition. Refractors are one of the most impressive, enabling the nutrient density of foods to be accurately measured. While they are largely used within the healthcare sector, these tools can also be purchased from suppliers such as RS Components.

These are just some of the new and existing technologies which are helping to improve nutrition. As technology continues to advance, our nutritional knowledge and control will also expand.
