Cockroaches are considered as one of the most irritably despised pests on earth. They are associated with a poorly maintained or a dirty environment and in rare cases they also carry diseases. Turning on the kitchen lights to see the antennae of roaches and the scuttling legs is certainly not a pleasant sight and can be added to the list of the worst nightmares.

Getting rid of cockroaches not always just involves insecticide spraying or setting down a bait. They are one of the most annoying pests that get in everything and can survive without food or water for months while rapidly multiplying. It is a tough task to get rid of them and if you are looking for ways then you have come to the right place. Listed below are some ways along with easy to do home remedies for roaches. (1)

Cut Off Food and Water Sources

Cockroaches can live without food for up to a month but they cannot survive without water for more than a week, they must have a source of water. Search for all water leakages and have them fixed. Once they’ll be unable to get any water they’ll be compelled to eat the gel-based baits. One sure way to assure there are no food particles available to the roaches is to clean the house thoroughly starting with the kitchen from washing the dishes properly to cleaning up the spills after cooking. Get rid of the greasy tops as cockroaches happen to love grease.

Try to keep the food containers properly closed and sealed and avoid keeping food uncovered out for longer periods. When mopping the floor do not slop water or leave puddles as roaches need water. Keep a trash can for food preferably one that has a lid and try not to let it sit for too long.

Baits for Cockroaches

Baits are usually protected in a plastic wrap to keep away from children’s reach as they contain a slow poison made attractive by wrapping it in food.  The roaches get attracted because of the food and eat the poison with it, they also take it back to the nest where the rest of the eggs get killed too.

There are two ways to use bait first is to buy a store bought bait and set it up near the corners or the sink or places where the cockroaches are seen.

The other way is to make a homemade bait with 1 part of cocoa, 1 part boric acid and 2 parts of flour and sprinkle the powder in the same places.

Insecticides

Make a solution of soap and water and spray it n the roaches or get an insecticide spray and spray that near the nest or the corners and cabinets. Do not spray near the bait as it might contaminate it. Keep the children and pets away while spraying due to the toxic ingredients.

Re-infestation Prevention

Keep your trash and wood piles away from the outside of the house as well. Block every entrance point for the roaches by sealing the cracks in the walls, cabinets, floor etc. Set out traps to prevent re-infestation either in the liquid, powder or gel form. (2)

Final Words

The roaches do pose a very difficult challenge and to get rid of them is not an easy task but by following the above-mentioned steps, killer products, and proper tools, battle against the roaches is a sure win.
