It can happen to almost anyone: you accidentally hit the front-facing camera button on your smartphone, and in your reflection are multiple chins.

In fact, recent studies have shown that the dreaded double chin is one of the main causes of camera woes – and has sparked an increase in demand for chin-slimming cosmetic procedures.

Weight gain, aging, and genetics can all influence the appearance of your chin.

Fortunately, there are steps you can take to reduce and even eliminate your sagging gobble. (1)

Diet and Exercise

Extra fat in humans is distributed all over the body. If you are overweight and have a double chin, the solution may be to reduce your overall BMI.

It’s no secret: the best way to reduce body fat is to combine cardiovascular exercise with some resistance strength training and an improved diet. Working out can also do wonders for your posture, which in turn might make your double chin less apparent.

Unfortunately, targeting body fat in one specific area is not possible through diet and exercise alone. Despite what you may have heard about the benefits of facial yoga, specific exercises for the chin and jaw area are unlikely to help burn off those stubborn, localized fat deposits.

Beauty Products and Creams

There are countless creams and serums on the market to help reduce the effects of aging and the loss of skin elasticity.

Some of the best products to look for containing peptides, hyaluronic acid, and vitamins C and E. These ingredients are key to fighting inflammation, boosting collagen production, and decreasing skin laxity.

When used in the neck area, skin care products can help fight sagging jowls by repairing and maintaining the skin’s tone and texture. (2)

Cosmetic Procedures

Cosmetic procedures are arguably the only way to quickly get rid of an unsightly chin bulge.

One such procedure is called CoolSculpting: cosmetic doctors use a specially designed, hand-held device to apply cold to targeted fatty areas. This actually freezes the fat cells away in a process known as cryolipolysis. Then the doctor massages the area to break up the fatty tissue, which is absorbed and naturally eliminated by the body. After about 12 weeks, your double chin is gone.

There’s also Kybella, which involves the injection of a drug into the area below the jawline. It’s the only treatment specifically designed and FDA-approved to combat a double chin. This treatment requires monthly maintenance but is a great solution to a lifelong problem.

All of the methods mentioned above require some investment of your time and money, but think of what you have to gain: without that pesky double chin, you’ll be updating your profile picture faster than ever!
